Italian Cooperative Credit came into being at the end of the 19th century, with the creation of the first system of Rural and Artisan Banks (Casse Rurali ed Artigiane), to help its members free themselves from the bonds of poverty and the scourge of usury.
Casse Rurali ed Artigiane were created among rural communities to grant more favourable loans, focusing on people and relying on their members self-financing capability. Since then, each Banca di Credito Cooperativo and Cassa Rurale have kept strong and deep ties with their territory, interweaving their history to that of the local community.
